Thanks for the input; I'm glad to have another Newport fan on the thread. I agree with your observations about making money in the research optics market: It is indeed slow going. On the other hand, according to its annual report (as well as its catalog) Newport is now trying to broaden out into other businesses such as precision positioning systems for photonics assembly. Their idea is that these applications represent a potentially growing market which will enable them to expand at a faster rate than an "optics only" company could. Do you have any observations about this strategy? Do you think that it makes sense? Are you aware of how much of Newport's revenues come from the old scientific optics, and how much come from newer OEM businesses?

You mentioned that Newport makes vibration isolation equipment. Beyond in clean rooms and physics experiments, where have you seen these systems in use?
