You had better go back and get a book on basic investing. You borrow the shares from your broker to sell them to someone. That is what creates the short position. When you buy them back it is so that you can return the shares that you borrowed back to the broker. You don't get to keep them!!

Thanks for the correction; Epinephrine...a little harsh, shorting is not basic investing, good shorters tend to be the most experienced traders.
