margin borrowing was only a couple per centage points even at the market high back in Feb.

Margin borrowing at these levels are definitely adding to the swings here. But as you point out, the important thing is that the levels aren't high enough to do real damage to the economy (can't say the same for my portfolio though). The NASDAQ can continue to be hammered without long term impact. Contrast this with Japan in the 80's where property values were sent sky high by leveraging stock market gains and vice versa. What a disaster.
