SJS, You are making good points on the short term health of the market. I still feel there is margin selling not by individuals but hedge funds. If for some reason the big US tech mutual funds want out, that could be doing that but i think scenario is less likely than the liquidations theory.

A big hedge fund going under will cause a lot of pain. The buyers will keep holding out for better prices until they can no longer get them.

Note that when the individual investors return, it will have a huge rally. That is why one can take a long term outlook. Avoiding margin is also a good idea unless you think we are close to a bottom. This might be a great buying opportunity. One has to ask why are the bulls so quiet these days. They are probably accumulating.

Actually margin should be used at market bottoms and not tops. I would prefer the leaps 2001 or 2002 alternative more than margin; Margin may be better if some short term protective puts are used in combination with margin to ride out some short term volatility.
Lots of ways to play this bottom fishing game.
