Hi Stewart - Indeed it's tough to make hay in optics in the research market. You're right that thay are trying to diversify. Their concenrtation on OEM SYSTEM markets should simultaneously reduce cost of sales and support - it's just as much work to support a single item sale as a customer that buys things over and over - they are up against weak competition in vibration isolation. Barry Controls, TMC and the others are easy pickin's IMO. I don't know jack about Newport's finances as I'm not an invesor (yet). As to the potential of vibration isolation, it is an enabling technology for precision motion control (another Newport product line!) Precision optics and is integrated into many semiconductor instrumentation and process tools. Biomedical applications even need vibration isolation (-and optics -and precision motion control). I think Newport is trying to be "furstest with the mostest" in this growing market.
