Steven:

Let me raise a small question regarding your use of a single word: "regulate".

<<Almost all human societies regulate sexual behaviour in some way, because they have found that such regulation is essential to maintaining social harmony. They didn't pull that notion out of some sort of idea bank, they learned it by observing and reacting.>>

If we agree that the male mammal seeks to spread sperm as broadly as possible. And if we agree that the superior, by any of many value systems, male gets to spread sperm more broadly. Don't we come to a point where this innate drive becomes codified, rather than regulated? So the "regulation" you speak of is simply an acknowledgment of innate characteristics?

The (something like) droit de signior, the liege's right to spread sperm into each new bride on the night of the wedding; the sultan-harem relationships; the rustic acceptance of inbreeding. ("If she ain't good enough for her own kin, she ain't good enough for me.")

And many currently accepted standards.

Are these observed reactions that result in regulation?

Or are they acceptances of the innate? In other words, are they truly "regulations?" Are they modifications of the innate, or codifications of it?

Admitted that social harmony is the goal, are the means to reaching it learned - or merely confirmations of what is?

Do they, the means, regulate or do they legitimize what they are not regulating?
