Terra-Brazil Introduces its WAP Portal

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Terra Networks Brazil, a
subsidiary of Terra Networks, S.A. (NASDAQ:TRRA), introduced today a new WAP
portal during the America's Telecom Conference being held in Rio de Janeiro.
This new portal will provide specific interactive content to mobile telephone
users, such us news, leisure, culture, entertainment, economy, sports or
stocks.
The portal is being launched in cooperation with Telefonica Celular, a
subsidiary of Telefonica Moviles, also a member of the Telefonica Group.
Initially, this new service will be available for the clients of Telefonica
Celular in Rio de Janeiro and Espiritu Santo. Terra-Brazil also plans to make
its WAP portal available for users of other cellular companies through the
address (http://www.terra.com.br/wap).
"We are taking an important step to reach new clients willing to use a
mobile telephone, but not necessarily a computer," said Marcelo Lacerda,
director of Terra-Brazil. The installed-base of mobile telephones in Brazil
is of 15 million, of which 8 million have been sold in 1999, what represents a
growth of almost 100%.
Terra-Brazil also announced today that a group of partners are ready to
carry out e-commerce operations using its new WAP portal. This makes Terra
the first portal to offers WAP e-commerce services in Brazil. The partners
are Fun by Net (tickets for events and shows), Morumbi Flores (Flowers), Senda
Supermercados (a chain of Supermarkets), Siciliano Livraria (books, CDs and
stationery) and Abcell (cellular phones and accessories).
"With the easiness of buying in Internet through the mobile telephone,
this market will grow exponentially," Lacerda said.
