WorldHeart drops, Jarvik completes transplant

Shares in Ottawa's World Heart Corp. lost five per cent on Thursday. While the volume was light, 54,000 shares, some people wondered how WorldHeart would be effected by a new development in the world of ventricular assist technology.

In an official statement, the world-renowned Texas Heart Institute revealed that, in the first ever procedure of its kind, it had implanted a "valveless, electrically powered miniature axial flow pump" into the left ventrical of an unidentified patient.

The device was built by Jarvik Heart Inc. and is called the Jarvik 2000.

The company said it has been developing the device for 10 years. It's the size of a "C" battery, fits directly into the left ventrical and pushes oxygenated blood throughout the body.

WorldHeart has also been working in ventricular assist technology. Its Heart Saver device is scheduled to begin clinical trials sometime later this year.

A WorldHeart employee told the OBJ the Heart Saver does not really compete with the Jarvik 2000. The Jarvik device is what's known as a bridge to transplant device, keeping a patient's heart beating while they wait for a new organ.

The Heart Saver, on the other hand, will be a fully implantable heart assist device designed to provide long-term support of pulsatile blood flow to people suffering from heart failure.
