Agency to award Anik F2 contracts

The Canadian Space Agency is set to award contracts worth $100-million today to
three firms -- Ottawa-based communications satellite operator Telesat Canada,
Com Dev International Ltd. of Cambridge, Ont., and Hughes Space and
Communications Co.,part of Los Angeles-based GM Hughes Electronics Corp. --
to build a higher-speed multimedia payload for Telesat's Anik F2 satellite,
government sources said. The F2 satellite, which is the second replacement for
Telesat's current Anik E series, is slated to be launched in 2002. The contracts, to be
announced by Industry Minister John Manley, follow a call for proposals from the
space agency.
