Duncan, I'm somewhat suspicious about the whole thing. I suspect Iridium needed more time to try to get the electronic gizmoes more complete. One of the drawbacks of Iridium is that once the satellites are up, that's it! They can't change the gizzards. So they won't want to launch something which will be obsolete before it gets into stable orbit.

Globalstar by comparison will be mostly ground based with old-hat, cheap and robust bent pipe satellites to send the signals straight back down again.

Perhaps Iridium are agonizing over pulling the plug altogether. I'm sure the weather hasn't been bad ever since January. They sure won't want everyone to think they have got a lemon on their hands when they are trying to raise money still.

I'll have a look around and see if they actually launched over the weekend - if you find they have, I'd appreciate an http on it.
