Cats and horses are another story.

Even cats seem to have this sense; I can't speak for horses. I still remember the day my father brought home a rambunctious puppy. All of a sudden, we heard this racket in the kitchen and found that the puppy had our cat rolled over onto his back. She was gnawing on his stomach with great zest. He could have caused her all kinds of injury and she was obviously hurting him. Instead he was yelling blue bloody murder for someone to remove this kid.

He "mothered" her through her puppyhood and put up with nonsense from her that he would not have tolerated from another adult animal or human.
