Hi Frank, This is quite a leap from the current state of bar coding. When I visited the OmniTracs booth at the Qualcomm shareholders meeting I observed to them that while the Omnitracs keeps can keep an eyeball on cab and driver, there was nothing to keep an eyeball on the CARGO!
My wife worked in the overland tranport business for years and the two big problems this addresses are lost and stolen containers.

One question that the release is how are they going to power these dudes?

It would be my guess that industries like consumer electronic would be the early adopters of this tech. Their cost/case is much higher than in my business and electronics make a good target for the less honorable.

Think about the value though of having essentially real time inventory by case and type and age without having to step out of the office and not rely on human counts. This would sure help where shelver space is a premium. The DC (distribution center)that serves us is on a real estate hunt as they have added another account and and now lack acceptable floor space. They've also been slowwwwwwww to adopt any of the technologies we've discussed before so go figure. <gg>

Not quite clear on what this does for you at the point of sale except perhaps improved security with regard to packaged goods. IOW as the product is scanned for price the radio capabilities are ?disarmed? allowing the customer to exit with the product and not setoff detection devices. ???

With regard to the site I sent you it is a dummy site the vendor set up for my friend who owns/operates 25 restaurants throughout So. Cal. They are proposing a VPN with App hosting through Exodus.
In an operation such as his this is perhaps a preffered method as he would have a vendor specialist monitor changes/updates to all applications for his enterprise. Central messaging would be a benefit as well.
