Dear Yaacov: What do you think Janet Reno should do?
>The way this silly woman is handling this case, it may lead to another Waco!
As most regulars on this thread know, I live farrrrrrrr away from FL, in New England, but the whole Elian situation is starting to really, REALLY concern me. Even if the Cuban community standing in the streets maintains that it is non-violent, does not intend any violence, I am concerned there will be violence unless Elian is, by some miracle, allowed to stay permanently in the States.
Ever been in a tightly packed crowd of people? I was once in 1979. We were waiting for a theatre to open for the opening night of a movie for which *everyone* had to purchase tickets in advance. This was in another country and the crowd waiting was 100% upper middle class or higher (plus a few expatriates) and everyone was dressed up: read, neither a group of rabble rousers nor people with *any* interest in violence--we were standing around, waiting for the theater to open so we could go to our assigned seats.
I have no idea what happened in the back, but suddenly a few people started to scream and we near the front were caught in an avalanche of people. It was terrifying. People were trampled. Fists were flying as a means of protection against the stampeed. I was not injured by at least one person died and a number required hospitalization.
Back to FL today: I just watched the noon news. During the Elian segment, one man standing in the crowd (with a last name of Maher) said things were calm right now but that S. FL was going to experience an Armagedon (sp?). He seemed pleased when he said this.
No amount of money could get me to go to S. FL right now.
