Yogi, any walls and barriers you perceive in the use of languages other than the one you've chosen are constructs of your own mind. Actually, languages are bridges ... and you can learn a lot about your own by studying others ... you can learn a lot about yourself as well. I know unilingual kids and bilingual kids and a few trilingual kids, and imho the healthy minimum is two languages ... no matter the ethnic origin ... there's a lot more to it than translating words, btw. Que te comprendas algo ;-)
