Japan's economic problems came only after the collapse of the equity markets, which subsequently casued the collapse of the property markets. The economic problems later found in Japan were the result of the rampant speculation. The financial markets and the economy are linked, so you will now see problems in the economy since it will be difficult to raise money in the capital markets.
