"The Sporting News is preparing to launch into the world of broadband connectivity, or super high-speed internet service. By this summer, the company expects to begin testing broadband services through Digeo Broadband, Inc. or Go2Net, companies controlled by Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder who has built a telecommunications empire..... ...The Sporting News, with circulation of 540,000, ranks fourth among national sports magazines, behind Sports Illustrated...Sport Magazine...and ESPN, The Magazine...But that could change under new ownership, said Reed Phillips, a managing partner at DeSilva & Phillips Inc., a New York firm specializing in media deals. "The Sporting News has an opportunity to break out of the competition they were in with other sporting publications by partnering with Paul Allen,' Phillips said. 'He clearly sees that they have a wealth of information and a loyal base of cutomers.'" |
