ALTA postpones IPO: biz.yahoo.com Friday April 14, 9:38 pm Eastern Time AltaVista to postpone IPO PALO ALTO, Calif., April 14 (Reuters) - The popular Internet portal AltaVista Co. said late Friday it is postponing an initial public offering planned for early next week, because of the weak current market conditions. The company gave no indication when it might try again to sell shares to the public, saying only that it would have to wait out the market. After several days of severe weakness, stock markets took a beating on Friday with both NASDAQ and the Dow Jones Industrial Average registering their biggest single day point declines ever. Most IPOs scheduled this week were cancelled or postponed and the many more set for next week are expected to also be put off. Alta Vista, a company which competes with online services like Yahoo Inc. (NasdaqNM:YHOO - news) and Lycos Inc. (NasdaqNM:LCOS - news), had been widely viewed as one of the stronger of the batch of IPOs coming up, and its decision to postpone the offering could make it less likely that other companies will proceed.
