Should be a challenging environment...

The G7 meeting -- which is to be followed by the IMF's spring meeting -- ``is clearly on everyone's mind, but so many people are taking pot shots at each other that it is difficult to see what will come out of it,' said Kathy Jones, director of futures research at Prudential Securities.

Earlier in the week Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers urged Japan and Europe to work harder to stimulate domestic demand-led growth while other global leaders criticized America for its huge current account gap, largely funded by foreign investments.

A G7 failure to mention the yen in its communique this weekend could send the currency into the stratosphere, said Allison Montgomery, currency economist at IDEAglobal.com, adding that dollar/yen could test the 103 yen area.

But ``given the risk of further sharp yen gains, that might even play a role in official talks this weekend,' Montgomery said.
