You are absolutely right, HB. As a "buy and holder," I have to admit that "buy and hold" is for the birds. I have seen too many gains trickle away forever... But it is not a question of expecting a 'free lunch.' All those folks, like James Glassman at the Washington Post, were beating into the heads of novices like myself that "buying and holding" was the responsible, adult thing to do. It was important to show "fortitude," which meant not abandoning the ship when it was clearly sinking. A stiff upper lip would lead to a fat wallet. Now that I am no longer a novice, having undergone baptism by fire more times than I care to count, I know that is a lot of hooey. But still...
