What do you think will be the effect of the stock market decline on Cisco and other companies that rely on stock options to attract and keep employees. Will cash salaries become more important than options? I read in the Seattle P-I this morning that 40% of Microsoft shares are owned by people in the Seattle area, including Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The press is speculating on whether this will make it more difficult for Microsoft. Many of the talented people in the fiber optics area are located in the Ottawa area and Cisco has been recruiting heavily in that area. Will the Silicon valley look less attractive to those people now living in Canada? I remember reading that ONI was sued by Nortel after ONI recruited some talented engineers from Nortel. Now, ONI will have great trouble in their IPO because of the suit and the decline in equity prices. It seems like this correction will make it very hard on startups and this may affect the acquisition strategy of the major players like Cisco, Lucent and Nortel. I am just speculating but it should be interesting to watch.
