Hi Mani,

I think that this type of one time gain (or loss) is part of GAAP earnings. You are absolutely correct that a prudent investor should not include them when considering an investment. But, to the degree that SEC filings are the official earnings, we now have a P/E - and I, at least, derive some satisfaction from that.
