Nikkei is the Japanese equivalent of the Wall Street Journal. I see no reason why they would make up stories like this without some foundation. It will be interesting to see if your theory about QCOM issuing a denial proves true. OTOH, if pursuing such a license is indeed the intention of QCOM mgmt. (meaning the Nikkei just scooped the story), then I have just seen the screwball from hell. You point out some obvious and some not-so-obvious unsavory implications for QCOM investors. Most importantly: Why the heck would QCOM pursue this strategy if the widely touted "all CDMA roads lead to Qualcomm" mantra is true? I find it bizarre that this is being interpreted as a show of strength.
