Scumbria,

Intel CPU's are DRAM type independent

What about Timna?

Is there not some latency associated with moving data from the CPU chip to the chipset and then on to the memory, of whatever type. At least one clock cycle, I would have thought, perhaps more. This would not be present when the Rambus controller is on the same chip as the processor, so regardless of the ongoing debate about Rambus' inherent latency, there might be MUCH less latency with a Timna-type processor using Rambus.
