Just read an article in Computer Technology Review that says imation is working with Terastor (run by Jim McCoy, co-founder of Quantum, Maxtor, and Maxoptix) on "near field recording" which should begin shipping products in early part of 1998. The new drives are expected to have beginning capacity of 20 GB per surface. The article states that this could be a major breakthrough if the performance is good compared to DVD. This technology may replace tape, MO, removable HDD and optical storage solutions in many backup and archive applications.
"It is filled with promise, but so is holographic storage and bio-memory (neither of which has been productized). There is a savvy executive team (at Terastor) and Capitalization around $30 Million."

Thoughts?
