In my experience and study, swift crashes like this are the result of derivatives meltdown or debt. Debt caused 1929 (10% margin rules, no up-tick rule either), and 1987 was derivatives (portfolio insurance).

I bet futures derivatives had alot to do with this, too. That's where the volume is.
