Judging from the price for the K6-2+ from this link news.cnet.com ($1099) and the model this notebook is probably replacing from this link hp.com (the N3210), I bet the K6-2+ chip in this HP notebook won't be 500MHz or higher.
I wonder how long the K6-2+ will last. According to JC's thing from the CC jc-news.com about 15% of processor shipments in Q1 were notebook chips, or 975K. Right now, I think K6-2 450, 475 and 500, but only from Compaq, are the main mobile MHz for sale. The funny thing is that AMD has denied the existence of the 500 on their website, maybe because only Compaq sells it.
Since the desktop K6-2 made it to 550 on AMD's hybrid .25 process, the mobile K6-2+ should at least hit the same mark because it will be made on a .18 process. That means 500, 533, and 550MHz should be possible for K6-2+ notebooks this year, or three speed grades higher than right now. By the time back to school buying comes around, these may be the big mobile MHz sellers for AMD. Chuck has said AMD may come out with a low-end Athlon mobile product before the high end Mustang version. If that happens, I bet it would start at 550MHz, or wherever the K6-2+ tops out at. |
