NEWS!!! Looks like Sony pressed the right buttons necessary to have the Japanese Government classify the PS2 as having a weapons use and in need of export control. This prevents Japanese PS2s from finding their way to other markets (US & Western Europe) in quantities prior to their official intro. Sony doesn't want large numbers of early adopters in other countries getting advanced copies.

Notice the article indicated the export controls would not affect PS2 intros in other countries.

Imagine the marketing hype concerning the PS2 intro in the US later this year. "So advanced, the Japanese Government blocked its export for fear of it falling into the wrong hands."
