I track the VIX as a sentiment measurement together with a couple of others.

The VIX made a high of 41.53 on Friday -- quite extreme; however, in the October 98 sell-off, if memory serves me right we actually saw it cross over 50. I believe that during the 87 crash it got into the triple digits -- though I was not keeping track of it at the time.

Listening to the talking heads over the weekend, the prevailing view seemed to be that we had more downside before a firm bottom is made -- but then most of these very same people were not exactly advising caution when we were making new highs, so I don't place much weight on their opinions.
