At least Reagan was much more up front that that damned draft dodger John Wayne who grew rich and famous pretending to be a fighting man. Any one who carries out the duty assigned to him has nothing to apologize for. Anyone who can find something in his service to brag about should get any acclaim he can earn. Reagan's distortions about his service usually arose from I imagine from his mental decay. and should I think be understood on that basis. I think everyone tends to exaggerate the past importance of his own life, at least in his day dreams. It must be unbearably tempting if one is president with no real personal achievements to make up great things that one accomplished to justify his pre-eminence. It is only fear of being exposed and an perhaps -- what's the word -- honesty? -- that prevents everyone from Walter Mitty moments.
