Greatswamie, thanks for sharing that post by the CMGI CEO (David Wetherell).

He's obviously not a free-market theorist or libertarian if he's insisting that the government should crack down on margin, in spite of Alan Greenspan's recent comments that he doesn't think that margin borrowing is a significant risk factor to warrant meddling by the Fed. Nor should moderating asset appreciation be a goal of the Fed's either, according to Greenspan.

Back to David Wetherell's comments... Sounds like he's merely upset that the market volatility forced him to postpone CMGI's much-awaited AltaVista.

[Isn't it ironic that the very CEO of CMGI wants to scapegoat margined investors, while at the same time going to the public markets with his AltaVista IPO in hopes of mopping up whose cash??... Many margined investors, of course. And what about the fact that it was largely due to margined investors sending CMGI's market-cap sky high that gave CMGI equity currency for acquisitions. Sounds rather hypocritical of Wetherell if you ask me.].

Following is someone's articulate response to Wetherell on RB:

"OT: dwether: I cannot agree with you on the question of margin. We are all adults in this market, so please don't protect me from myself. We already have plenty of that going on in this society. If I wanted an 8-10% return on my money, I sure wouldn't need to invest in a net stock.

Serious problems in the markets include:

1. pump and dump by analysts.

2. pulling the rug out from under small investors feet by removing a stock as a marginable security (EMLX) after they have allowed many investors to buy into the security on margin.

3. inside info to analysts before the general investing public has a clue.

4. upgrades and downgrades to move the stock in a certain way.

5. Allowing market makers to trade stocks for the account of the house they work for ( If this isn't a conflict on interest, I don't know what is).

These are just some of the reasons that the cards are stacked against the small investor. These should be fixed before the small investor has this current crash hung around his neck!! Respectfully, paro "
