So why not go cdma2000 and get roaming over the whole world, including Europe? What is that magic ingredient in W-CDMA which makes it so superior that the network effect of worldwide roaming is not worth losing the technical advantage?

The synchronisation is that good? The chip rate? What? Lower royalty rate?...hey, Maurice, don't be cynical...you know there are many trying to bite that cherry and it will NOT have low royalty rates. Like GSM, it will be extorquerationate.

W-CDMA will be a niche standard. Not such a smart idea. An enclave in the world of networks with intelligence at the periphery is not the way to go.

It's like being able to speak Maori [the native NZers lingo] or Finnish. Fun and no doubt a great many jokes can be said. But no use asking for directions.
