Cool! Now Howard Goldberg can go back to being President of ITC, the company which houses all of IDC's patents. IDC also got a longtime Motorola veteran who was aware of Motorola's 1995 pre-Markman jury trial victory and the questions it raised about the integrity of IDC's TDMA patent portfolio, questions which have been partially laid to rest by many post-1997 patent licensing agreements, the late 1999 USPTO patent revalidations and which should be completely resolved, one way or the other, by the ongoing trial against Ericsson. His Spectrapoint Wireless and Iridium experience should be very useful considering Nokia's own fixed wireless plans. Here is the 6/7/99 press release about Spectrapoint Wireless and how the second Cisco-Motorola JV is built on the fixed wireless assets of Bosch, which is an IDC licensee:

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999--Motorola and Cisco (Nasdaq:CSCO) today announced an agreement to jointly purchase the fixed wireless assets of Bosch Telecom, Inc. in Richardson, Texas.

Bosch Telecom is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Robert Bosch Corporation in Germany. In purchasing Bosch Telecom, Cisco and Motorola will create a jointly owned company called SpectraPoint Wireless.

SpectraPoint Wireless will focus on delivering high-speed data, voice and video capabilities to businesses over a fixed wireless infrastructure called Local Multipoint Distribution Services (LMDS). LMDS is a last-mile technology that replaces the need for wired phone and cable lines. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.........

.......On Feb. 3, 1999, Cisco and Motorola announced their shared architectural vision to deliver an open Internet-based framework for the cellular industry, intended to work across all wireless standards such as GSM -- Global System for Mobile Communication; CDMA -- Code Division Multiple Access; TDMA -- Time Division Multiple Access, etc.
