I just know that everyone keeps on buying PCs and Windows regardless of the hype that the cheap alternative will grab the market. The $99 terminal isn't realistic because the thin client is too thin to do what we need it to do. To embed that functionality pushes thin to fat and then you have the desktop or its equivalent. No doubt the Net is the computer, but the problem with that is its bus runs at 1 mbps whereas the local PC bus runs at 100 mbps. For the next 10 years this fact will persist, but the desktop will decline in price or rise in functionality/power. So "internet appliances attached to a broadband connection, using net based productivity apps, storing your data on virtual hard drive on the web" isn't currently realistic.

Everyone, including MSFT, wants to go away from the older versions of Windows. MSFT created them unintentionally with all their problems because they were responding to the variety of demands from their vast captured market. They were giving everyone what everyone wanted. You can't get an MBA unless you learn to jump through hoops for the client.

One way out of the morass is to increase functionality that makes minimal calls to the OS API. The idea is to push functionality back out to the app and destress the OS by doing so. This is accomplished by pursuing the application specific add-on market. The complexity of function moves away from the OS and back out to where specificity is needed by all the variety of users, in the application.
