Tero, the 'it doesn't matter to us' business was in relation to IPR payments. The royalties will be the same. However, QUALCOMM has determinedly pushed for a single standard all along, only agreeing to a multimode standard after it was sufficiently harmonized that they figured they could jam both into a handset without too much cost in space or loss of efficiency, that it would be acceptable to subscribers.
That does NOT mean that it's a good solution.
It would be far better to have a single solution based on utilitarian principles. Bilingualism costs heaps. It arises from tribalism and territorial limitations. There is no value in it. Eventually, when operating in a single geographic or communicative space, one will take over. Then again, maybe that's why our brains have two halves and eventually, our stupid cellphones will have two halves with the difference between W-CDMA and cdma2000 being the original zygotic reason.
Maybe cdma2000 will process imagery and the other half, the W-CDMA half, will process language and mobility. Each half can monitor the other for failure and they can discuss things between themselves; on the other hand...
