"how one could 'tune-in' to a pc and hear the sounds in the room"

For the easiest method you'll need Tin foil and cardboard from which you will construct a hat in the shape of a cone and a coat hanger which you will attach as an antenna to the top of the hat. Now clip one end of a serial data cable to your antenna using spliced-on alligator clips. Plug the other end into a palm computer with the "latest chips" installed. Put the hat on and boot the palm.

"Tuning-out" the connection is easier still. Just pop a couple lithium.

As an alternative, there is a far more complicated method that involves persuading the victim into accidentally executing a rather hefty e-mail attachment sent by a loose confederation of Luddites and anarchists that are, get this, rumored to masquerading as netizens of SI itself. The group is known to use the code words "Critical Mass" as some sort of shibboleth. Once they get the "back door" open, you can't close it. Their only weakness is a universal hatred of early 80s "New Wave" music...so put on some Devo or Talking Heads and it'll drive them crazy.
