CDMA2000 is the only 3G technology that could be built on the already existing CDMAone.With WCDMA you need to start from scratch building out your infrastructure wether you happen to be an existing CDMA or GSM carrier.The key here is to get one type of 3 G CDMA so a clear standard is adopted and true economies of scale are allowed to come into play.QUALCOMM enjoys an already existing CDMA franchise and although they benfit with royalties and chip sales with both CDMA2000 and WCDMA ,the existing franchise in CDMAone has QUALCOMM doing what there carrier customers want ,supporting the most cost effective path to 3G.
