The possibility of non-sexual intimacy depends on how a person actually responds to various stimuli and I suspect that it varies between different people. My own experience is that kissing and holding anyone (more than casually) usually excites me in a way that I recognize as sexual (and always have) even if I don't wish it to. I also avoid being hugged and kissed on the same grounds. I always avoid hugging and kissing people unless it is a prelude to a licit sexual encounter. I believe I am overly sensitive to such contacts because I have been the victim of attempted rape and of several forcefully physical approaches. I may have unconsciously misinterpeted some other more casual physical contacts as sexual when they were not intended as such.
Many young men and boys like to tussle and play physically with each other. In many places young men walk and talk and hold hands (as doubtless Jon and David did). David said it was love, as did John. If so, it was homosexual love, whether or not it involved specific sexual acts. Personally, I have no objection to any two people loving one another and having sexual relations as long as they understand the consequences of their acts and one does not exploit the other. Parents touching children intimately bothers me (but I am told that there are cultures in which fathers do so without criticism.) I think it is difficult for an outsider to criticize emotional conduct within a family. What some people might consider incest is considered by others to be familial love. As for friends, like David and Jonathan, or Jesus and John, they were old enough to set their own terms.
