I have a question about trades using margin. I have about $12,000 in my account now with no margin but no cash. If I put in another $1000 and bought say $1500 of AMD how would my margin requirement be calculated? Do my current stocks in that account figure at all or is margin only calculated on percentage for that particular purchase?

If you had $10000 in an account and brought $2000 of XYZ stock, putting up $1000 of cash and your margin requirement was 50% would you get a margin call if the stock went down at all or only if the value of your entire account went down to $1000 or less?
