Humana to use Smart Card for online healthcare

ATLANTA, April 17 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. <MSFT.O>, Healtheon/WebMD Corp. <HLTH.O> and Humana Inc. <HUM.N> announced a collaboration on Monday aimed at integrating business in the healthcare industry.

Under the collaboration, managed care company Humana will use Microsoft Windows for Smart Card technology to authenticate Humana members and enable consumers to securely exchange information through the use of Healtheon/WebMD's Internet portal.

Humana announced a strategic relationship in January with Healtheon/WebMD, which aims to become a Web-based link between doctors, patients, drug companies and insurers.

Windows-powered Smart Cards, which are the size of a credit card, have a crypto-capable microprocessor and can perform a number of practical applications, such as secure corporate log-ons for Windows 2000, Web and phone authentications, and can store medical data.

The companies said that Humana will be the first managed care company to implement Microsoft's Windows for Smart Card technology.
