(2303.TW) has denied local media reports Tuesday that UMC may be forced to halt production at its No. 5 chip plant after the government's environmental protection agency said the plant hadn't undergone an environmental assessment. An official at Taiwan's number two chipmaker said Tuesday, it has met environmental protection requirements regarding its No. 5 chip plant in the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park. "We believe we have complied with all the environmental protection regulations and cooperated with the environmental protection agency to clear up the situation," an official at the company said. The fab plant is running as usual and there are no plans to halt production at the new plant, which is due to begin volume production during the third of the year, he added.
