Don't treat Linux as if it was Windows. That's not a cost-effective way to do it.

Red Hat sometimes makes people believe, that Linux is an OS, that is to be handled like Windows. It's not. Don't use the upgrade feature on a Red Hat distribution CD. That is not a stable way to administer a Linux system, unless you know what you are doing.

I've seen many 4 year old Linux boxes with USB support, latest kernel, latest KDE etc. They weren't upgraded using Red Hat's upgrading mechanisms.

But: Remember that you can delete the old operating system and install a new without removing any of your settings, data etc. I have done that several times, and it typically takes 30-60 minutes to reinstall everything from scratch, and afterwards your icons on the desktop are placed exactly where you left them, and all your settings are intact. This is something that can never be done with Windows.
