Sorry Maurice, but that maybe true, but is ever so misleading. You are starting to play Perry's nasty old game. Yes the air-interface of cdma2000 of course would do the same job (maybe even better), however the standard was developed for IS-95, where as WCDMA was from the start developed for GSM. I remember a conference where Qcom presented this ever so lovely Power Point presentation where the GSM migrates to cdmaOne (yes, remember that fruitless Qcom dream?) - it was openly laughed at.
cdma2000 overlaying GSM is in a similar ilk.
The biggest error that Qcom made was not to build in GSM support (or get support from the GSM community) from the begining and they just kept on saying we have something better - the simple truth is that this alienated them with the industry.
The process of standardisation is coming to a close. WCDMA is not a lemon, but if you still insist then likewise GSM is too (and look at its continuing success).
I know you were at T99 in Geneva and I hope that the multitude of vendors and service providers showcasing WCDMA/UMTS provided just a little hint of what is to come (and in what flavour!). You maybe surprised to know, that for me one of the most interesting display was on the Lucent stand where everyone was welcome to make calls between their cdma2000 and WCDMA networks - that was a first for me. However, the NEC UMTS gadget/handset/add-ons stole the show for me.
Enough of the reminiscing, here's to the future. Regards, M |
