New photonic switches....any comments?

MRV Forms a New Start-Up Company, Optical Crossing Inc., to Develop Third-Generation Photonic Switches

CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 17, 2000--MRV Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:MRVC) today announced that it has formed a new start-up company, Optical Crossing Inc., a developer of all- optical switch components.

Optical Crossing plans to develop a novel, extremely low-loss, photonic switch. Most optical switch components announced to date attenuate the signal, which causes a certain amount of optical power losses. The result is a deterioration of the signal-to-noise ratio of the transmitted data and a limitation of the transmission range in all-optical networks.

Optical Crossing plans to develop and commercialize a novel photonic switch, which prevents optical signal degradation. The new company expects that these switches will play a critical role in building optical switches, optical add/drop multiplexers (OADM) and optical networks.

The development of low-loss Optical Crossing devices is a step forward in the development of all-optical networks, as it will allow signals to remain in the optical domain and reduce the number of optical-electronic-optical (OEO) conversions required in a network. The new photonic devices will operate at network speed of up to 40Gbs and are expected to reach the marketplace next year.

The new Optical Crossing technology is a third-generation photonic switch, which is expected to play a key role in a wide variety of future-generation components. Optical Crossing founding team members have more than 60 years of combined experience with fiber-optic components and systems development at Bell Laboratories, Lucent, Polaroid, Rockwell and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Noam Lotan, president and chief executive officer of MRV, commented: "We have adopted a business model of creating and managing several start-up companies and forming independent business units, in optical components and optical networks.

"Forming Optical Crossing is an important step towards implementing an all-optical network. Optical Crossing and MRV share a commitment to implement this all-optical network concept."

About MRV Communications

Over the past two years, MRV adopted a business model of creating and managing several start-up companies and forming independent business units, in order to take them public. The principal focus of the MRV group of companies, which now comprises 14 companies, is Optical components, Optical networks and Internet infrastructure.

MRV Communications is a world-class leader in optical network components and systems. The company has leveraged its early leadership in fiber-optic transmission into a well-focused range of solutions, integrating switching, routing, access servers and optical transmission systems.

As the Internet evolves into a single global communication network, MRV has launched the development of new technologies to drive the next-generation infrastructures. Such developments encompass optical access systems, subscribers' management systems and Linux-based solutions.

MRV has initiated and funded cutting-edge start-up companies including Zaffire Inc. (formerly known as New Access Communications), Charlotte's Networks, Hyperchannel, Zuma Networks and, most recently, RedC Optical Networks Inc.
