But they (the Commandments) aren't THE starting place- and they certainly aren't the starting place for all the people who never read 'em, and aren't Christian/Jewish. And I'll give you an alternate and equally plausible theory that religion comes from morality- man lumbers about, doing what he does, finding out what works best socially and then casts about for Gods that "work" for him. For example, the old testament kick ass vicious God works great for a nomadic people. You want the land- go in and kick out the locals- and say it's the will of God. Smite right. Smite left. That works fine for nomads. BUT when you settle down in big cities, and you get more social- a less irascible God works wonders. Not that you can't still smite for Jesus, but it doesn't jibe as well with his message.
