Bux,
<< That's the beauty of 1xrtt. It is 3G and it will be here before any WCDMA. I don't think Qualcomm has any standards setting competition when it comes to 1x and 3x, both are Q's babies. >>
... and therein lies the problem. They are Q's babies. Technological marvels available quickly but not interoperable with the mainstream of digital wireless mobile telephony. It appears, that a version of cdma2000 that is acceptably harmonized with UMTS is WAY, WAY, out there. For that reason we see comments in news releases that cdma2000 will not be commercially available till 2005, and we scratch our heads because we KNOW it will be available quicker than that.
<< Wideband CDMA could be mired in standards battles >>
If the standards are not set, they are a whisker away. They are not battles this time around. All of the standards bodies and regulatory agencies of the world have been cooperating in a a manner the wireless world has never seen. All, that is, except the 3GPP2 folks, but OHG is taking up the slack there.
<< Again, I doubt if Qualcomm is actually considering bidding on spectrum >>
I agree. Presumably QCOM management knows what they are doing by employing the tactic of being prepared to bid for a 3G license in Japan. I hope so. Personally, I don't like it. I'm getting the impression that it is a last ditch effort, a big gamble, likely to alienate some potential allies, and that right now QCOM, CDG, & 3GPP2 are on the outside of the real 3G world looking in. I hope I am wrong.
I would like to see QCOM using every available $ to fund acquisition or R&D for developing excellence in ASIC design for every mode of the 3G air interface to supplement the royalty stream I am confident they will derive from all flavors of 3G.
*** OT *** Q at 119.50 on Island. Go Qualcomm! Sorry Ramsey Nazi. <g> I only do this end of Quarter.
