I say give the old folks their money back plus interest but if you want more than that, it isn't going to be much. If I'm going to allocate scarce resources it isn't going to go to old folks near the end of their lives. For more bang for my buck I'd like to see the bulk of our aid going to children, and not just for maintainance but to actually improve their lives. Older people have far more of the economic pie at this point than children do, mostly because children don't vote. Makes me sick to hear some of the seniors where we live talk about the money they put in to the system. It was peanuts, and they are getting back way more than they put in, on average. My husband, on the other hand, pays in more than he will ever get back. Do I sound frustrated, you bet. My mother who calls her social security her "mad money" has been collecting for 14 years. She got her money back a long time ago, now she is wasting her grandkids money . If she were eating kitty food and down on her luck I could understand a little help from the state but come on people, why does my husband need to pay his money in (that we could be using to save for our kids college) so my mom can go out to dinner 5 nights a week(no joke-she doesn't like to cook.)
