Alternate explanation of holocaust behavior:

Reasonable people looking ahead could see that this society was NOT one they wanted to see persist. Even though it would have been in the short term interest of people to work with the Nazis, it was in their longer term interest (and collective interest counts, because on some levels we think and function collectively, part of our social adaption) to work against them.

It's probably mostly wired into us, whether we concentrate on the short term or the long term, whether we are big picture or little picture people. Both are probably necessary to move us along.
