Where does the horror come from? What is the horror BUT a pressure to adapt. So humans adapt- some by conforming and some by resistance. Natural selection and natural diversity (if true) would lead us to expect many reactions to pressure, and, indeed, that is what we see- and one or more of these diverse traits or behaviors would be selected for, which is also what we see. It isn't black and white or either or. And some traits are just carried along until they become usable. For example, the propensity to be a guerilla fighter is probably in a certain percentage of the population- but only certain pressures would cause that trait to be manifested.
