There is an imperative to breed as much as possible in a non-industrialized society where one's children represent one's farm machinery and one's social security. Where technology replaces labor and the State or affluence provide for care of the elderly- the pressures to breed large families are relieved. Although the pressure can remain fixed in the culture even if they are not justified by need. It takes social evolution to get rid of the idea.

We haven't been industrialized long enough for our evolution to catch up to where we are now. I don't know where the pressures we face now will take us- as far as I know NO ONE can say for sure. I know where I think we've been and I know where I think we are now- I can guess how we got HERE. I can theorize several paths we might take from here.
