Good points. But what is pretty clear is that the evolutionary future was unplanned and may still be. There is no natural purpose to any form of life, nor is there a lot of imagination possible in planning for the future. When our ancestors sat around and ate a lot of leaves, the appendix was a useful digestive pouch. Now its just a great place for infection. You knew of course that Eisenhower had his removed before he took command in Europe just in case. Now that we can replan the human genome we will have to answer these questions of what we wish human beings to be. Expect a lot of resistance on principle to "improving" the human race. All of us are defective in one way or another. Once we can predict what defects our kids will inherit many of us will become quite selective about which ones, if any, we choose to rear. This will leave the field to those who do not care enough only to raise the very best. The principal argument of the eugenics movement may turn out to be true. Instead of "getting better" mankind may well degenerate.
